Dr Melissa Tan Ley Hui is a United Kingdom (UK) certified Consultant Breast Surgeon specialising in Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery. She graduated from the University of Birmingham, UK in 2003 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). In 2014, she was awarded as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) in general surgery with special interest in Breast Surgery.
Dr Mel has over 20 years of experience as a doctor in the UK National Health Service (NHS) hospitals. Prior to joining Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC), she was an established consultant surgeon in City Hospital Birmingham, an NHS hospital located in the second biggest city in the UK. Dr Mel was also a recipient of the highly competitive and prestigious UK Training Interface Group (TIG) Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship. Under this fellowship Dr Mel spent a year training at the Royal Marsden Hospital London, Chelsea. The Royal Marsden Hospital was the first hospital in the world dedicated to the study of and treatment of cancer. To date it remains as one of the most well-known cancer hospitals. It works in collaboration with The Institute of Cancer Research.
Just before she became a Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon in 2018, She completed two further fellowships. One visiting fellowship at the renowned Nottingham Breast Institute and clinical fellowship in City Hospital Birmingham.
Dr Mel is currently practising at the Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is fluent in English, Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and Hakka and is able to understand and converse in Indonesian.
Dr Mel held many leadership roles, such as the Clinical Governance Lead and the Quality Improvement Lead in the Breast Surgery Department at City Hospital Birmingham. In 2021, her breast surgery team won the "Quality of Care" Award in her NHS Trust, an award nominated by patients and patients' relatives and friends.
In 2023, she returned to Malaysia with her husband and her daughter to be closer to her family.
Dr Mel is a keen educator. Throughout her years in training, she was an elected member of various committees within the UK breast trainees' group (Mammary Fold), a charity organisation with the aim of increasing the profile of breast surgery as well as improving breast surgery training for both undergraduates and postgraduates' surgeon trainees.
She was regularly invited to be an examiner for an award winning course, Master in Oncoplastic Course at the University of East Anglia, UK.
While she was a consultant in the UK, Dr Mel was one of UK's National Trainer in Breast Surgery. She and her colleagues ran many live surgery courses for surgeons from all over the world, where they observed her performing breast conserving surgeries using plastic surgery techniques, called oncoplastic breast surgeries.
She was also invited by the British Association of Day Surgery to share her expertise in Day Case Breast Surgery.
Dr Mel is passionate about educating the public, general practitioners and healthcare insurance agents. She is an advocate for breast cancer awareness and regularly delivers talks on the topic during events held on Pink October, International Women's Day, World Cancer Day and more.
